How to create your short link, step by step

Every WAPP.MY short link follows one simple pattern: wapp.my/r/yourbrand. The part after /r/ is your custom alias — the piece you choose, remember and print on your packaging.

  1. Create a free account. Sign up with email or Google in under a minute. No card is needed.
  2. Paste your destination URL. This is the long page you want people to reach — a product page, a Google Form, a menu PDF or your own website.
  3. Choose your custom alias. Type the word you want after wapp.my/r/ and check that it is available. A valid alias is 6 to 30 characters long, uses lowercase a-z, digits and hyphens only, and cannot start or end with a hyphen.
  4. Save the link. A free account keeps up to 3 links so you can manage them and read their analytics at any time.
  5. Share it. Paste it into WhatsApp, your social bio, an SMS broadcast, an email signature or a QR code — anywhere your customers already are.

Good aliases are short, readable and tied to the campaign: wapp.my/r/raya2026, wapp.my/r/menu or wapp.my/r/kltuition. Skip random strings — nobody can read them and nobody remembers them.

Aliases are lowercase only, so type them in lowercase rather than relying on the link to fix your capitalisation afterwards. The short-link feature is currently marked BETA in the member app, so you will see it keep improving as updates ship.

What your click analytics actually show

A short link is not just prettier — it is measurable. Once your link is live, the dashboard records every tap so you can tell which channel is really working. Here is exactly what a free account shows you:

  • Total clicks — every tap your link has received since you created it.
  • Unique visitors — real people, de-duplicated by IP address, so one person refreshing the page does not inflate your numbers.
  • Repeat rate — how many visitors came back, a quick signal of genuine interest rather than one-off curiosity.
  • Device type — mobile, tablet or desktop, so you know whether to optimise for thumb or mouse.
  • Browser and operating system — useful when a landing page behaves differently on one setup.
  • Country — where your clicks come from, reported at country level.
  • UTM source — the campaign tag carried by the link, so a WhatsApp broadcast and a Facebook post are never mixed together.
  • Referrer — where the visitor was before they tapped, when the platform chooses to pass that information through.
  • Last 7 days trend — a rolling week view so you can spot the spike after a campaign goes out.

Analytics are reported at country level rather than city or region, and referrer data is only as good as what the source platform decides to send. WhatsApp, for example, sends very little — which is why campaign tags matter so much.

UTM tracking: set it once, read it everywhere

UTM parameters are the small tags added to the end of a URL — utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign — that tell Google Analytics, or any analytics tool, exactly where a visit came from. Without them every visitor looks identical; with them, "whatsapp" and "facebook" are never confused again.

The awkward part of UTM tagging is that you normally have to rebuild the tagged URL for every campaign. WAPP.MY solves that by storing the UTM parameters on the link itself: you set them once when you create the link, and every share of that link carries the same campaign data.

One honest limitation is worth knowing up front:

  • On a /r/ short link, UTM parameters are recorded and forwarded to your destination, so your own website or Google Analytics sees the full campaign data.
  • On a WhatsApp-type link, UTM parameters are recorded only. WhatsApp strips UTM parameters as it passes the link through, so the destination page will not receive them. You still see the campaign inside your WAPP.MY dashboard.

If campaign attribution on your own website is the goal, use a /r/ short link and point it at a tagged landing page — our guide to tracking WhatsApp campaigns with UTM and short links walks through the setup. If your link is a chat link rather than a URL, the guides on how to shorten a WhatsApp link in Malaysia and the WhatsApp link generator cover that side. WAPP.MY short link vs a generic URL shortener

Generic shorteners do one job: make a URL shorter. WAPP.MY is built around how Malaysian businesses actually share links — on WhatsApp, in bios and on printed QR codes — so the extras that matter are already included.

Six ways Malaysian businesses use short links

A short link works hardest when a customer is one tap away from doing business with you. These are the six patterns we see most often:

WhatsApp broadcast offersSend a promo to your customer list and see exactly how many tapped through.
Instagram and TikTok bioOne clean wapp.my/r/ link instead of a long, truncated URL.
Shopfront and packaging QRPrint it on a sticker or box so one scan lands on your latest menu or reorder page.
Order tracking updatesDelivery notifications link straight to a status page or a feedback form.
Paid ad campaignsGive every campaign its own link and its own UTM tags, then compare results.
Email and SMS signaturesA tidy link in every auto-reply, invoice and signature.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using one link for every channel. If WhatsApp and Facebook share a link, you cannot tell which one earned the sale. Create one per channel or campaign.
  • Choosing an alias nobody can read. wapp.my/r/x7k2q9 tells your customer nothing, and it is impossible to read out over the phone.
  • Leading or trailing hyphens. -promo and promo- are invalid aliases. Keep hyphens in the middle, like raya-2026.
  • Uppercase letters or spaces in the alias. Aliases are lowercase a-z, digits and hyphens only, and they cannot start or end with a hyphen — anything else is rejected.
  • Pointing at a page that is not mobile-ready. Almost every tap comes from a phone, so check the destination on a real handset first.
  • Forgetting UTM tags. Adding them later means the early clicks arrive with no attribution, and that data cannot be recovered.
  • Never testing the link. Tap it once from a different device before you print it on 5,000 flyers.

Can I use my own custom alias?

Yes — choose 6-30 characters (lowercase letters, digits, hyphens) for a branded link like wapp.my/r/yourbrand.

Can I track clicks on my short link?

Yes. Free accounts get click analytics: total clicks, unique visitors, device, browser, operating system, country, referrer and a rolling 7-day trend, plus UTM campaign tracking.

What rules apply to a custom alias?

An alias is 6 to 30 characters and may contain lowercase letters a-z, digits and hyphens only. It cannot start or end with a hyphen — wapp.my/r/raya-2026 is valid, wapp.my/r/-raya is not.

What do the click analytics show?

Total clicks, unique visitors de-duplicated by IP, repeat rate, device, browser, operating system, country, UTM source, referrer and a rolling 7-day trend. Location is reported at country level.

Does WAPP.MY forward UTM parameters to my website?

On a /r/ short link, UTM parameters are recorded and forwarded to the destination, so your analytics tool sees the campaign. On a WhatsApp-type link they are recorded on WAPP.MY only, because WhatsApp strips UTM parameters.

Is there advertising on free links?

No. The free version has no ads — nothing sits between your customer and your destination.
