How to Shorten Shopee, Google Maps & TikTok Links for WhatsApp Sharing
Three link types dominate Malaysian WhatsApp sharing more than any others: a Shopee product, a Google Maps location, and a TikTok video. They are also the three ugliest things you can paste into a chat. Each one arrives as a long, wrapped string of characters that nobody can read, nobody can retype, and nobody wants to tap.
The good news is that the ugliness is removable. Every one of those links contains a short, essential part surrounded by a very long tracking tail. This guide shows what is actually inside each link, how to shorten each platform's link properly, what a clean version looks like side by side with the original, and how to keep the whole thing trackable from one dashboard.
Everything here runs on shorter, branded links like wapp.my/r/yourbrand, created free on WAPP.MY. Over 150,000 Malaysian businesses already do this, and the platform has generated more than 18 million links.
Why These Three Links Always Look Ugly in WhatsApp
The problem is not the length by itself — it is what the length is made of. Each of the three platforms appends tracking and context parameters so it knows where a click came from and how it was shared. Useful for them, painful for you.
- Shopee links carry a readable product name, then shop and item identifiers, then a query string of campaign and share parameters. The product name is nice. Everything after the question mark is not.
- Google Maps links carry a place name, an @latitude,longitude pair, a zoom level, and a long data= blob that encodes the map state. That blob can be longer than the rest of the URL combined.
- TikTok links carry the creator handle and the video ID, then share-source parameters such as which app the link was copied from and a share identifier.
WhatsApp will sometimes render a preview card, which hides the mess behind an image and a title. But previews fail, get stripped when a link is forwarded, and disappear entirely when someone copies a URL into a plain text field. When that happens, your customer sees the full string — a dozen wrapped lines that make your message look like it came from a bot.
What Is Hiding Inside a Shopee Link
A Shopee product URL has two halves. The first half is the part a human can read: the domain, the product slug, and an item identifier. The second half is the query string: a series of parameters that tell Shopee which campaign, share channel or affiliate account the click belongs to.
Only the first half is required to load the product. The second half is required to credit whoever shared it. That distinction matters: do not delete parameters by hand unless you are certain what they do, because removing the wrong one can stop a sale being attributed to you.
The safer method is to shorten the whole link without editing it. When you paste a Shopee URL into the WAPP.MY short link tool and save it with a custom alias, you get something like wapp.my/r/coffeebeans. Tapping it forwards to the original address with the query string intact, so tracking parameters still travel with the visitor, but your customer only ever sees your clean alias. If you are running affiliate links, test one shortened link once before a live campaign — a ten-second test beats a lost commission.
There is a second advantage: because the alias points at a link you control, you can repoint it later. If a product sells out, switch the destination to a related item instead.
How to Shorten a Google Maps Link
Maps links are the most shared link in Malaysian food, retail and services. They are also the hardest to type, which is exactly why a short version pays off.
Start by getting the cleanest link the platform will give you. Open the place in Google Maps and use the built-in share option rather than copying the address bar, because the address bar version carries extra map-state data that the share link trims down. That share link is still long, but it is the correct one to build on.
Then paste it into WAPP.MY and give it an alias that says what it is: wapp.my/r/kedaikopi-map or wapp.my/r/workshop-location. Two things you gain immediately:
- It can be read out loud. "Go to wapp dot m-y slash r slash kedaikopi-map" works over the phone. A coordinates string never will.
- It survives a move. When you relocate, edit the destination to the new pin. The link printed on your flyer and saved in your customers' chats still works.
If a customer needs both directions and a way to contact you, pair the map link with a digital vCard or place it on a Bio Links page next to your WhatsApp chat button.
How to Shorten a TikTok Link
TikTok links copied from the share menu carry the video's canonical address plus a set of share-source parameters. The canonical address — tiktok.com/@handle/video/ followed by the video number — is the part that matters. Everything after the question mark describes how the link was shared, not what it points at.
You have two safe options:
- Shorten the full link as-is. Paste it into WAPP.MY and save it with an alias. Nothing is stripped, so nothing can break, and your customer sees a clean link.
- Place it behind a thematic alias. If the video is part of a campaign, use an alias like wapp.my/r/recipe-video. Next month you can point that alias at a new video, and every link you already shared keeps working.
That second option is the one Malaysian sellers underuse. A TikTok video is disposable; the campaign is not. An alias lets a single published link live as long as the campaign does, no matter how many videos you make.
Before and After: Worked Examples
Shopee product
Before: a long shopee.com.my product URL with a slug, shop and item identifiers, then a query string of campaign and share parameters running to well over a hundred characters.
After: wapp.my/r/coffeebeans — 27 characters, readable, and pointing at exactly the same product with all parameters preserved.
Google Maps location
Before: a google.com/maps place URL containing the place name, an @3.1578,101.7123,17z position and a data= blob encoding the map state.
After: wapp.my/r/kedaikopi-map — opens the same pin, readable over the phone, and repointable if you move.
TikTok video
Before: a tiktok.com video URL with the handle and video ID followed by share-source parameters that describe the device and app it was copied from.
After: wapp.my/r/recipe-video — one alias you can reuse for every video in the campaign.
In each case the experience is identical: tap, arrive. What differs is how the link looks in the chat — and that decides whether anyone taps at all.
A Table of the Main Link Types You Share
| Link type | What is inside it | Why it looks bad | Shorten it to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopee product | Product slug, shop and item IDs, tracking query | Long tracking tail after the ? | wapp.my/r/youralias |
| Shopee shop | Shop name plus share parameters | Wraps across lines | wapp.my/r/yourshop |
| Google Maps place | Place name, coordinates, zoom, map-state blob | data= blob is very long | wapp.my/r/yourlocation |
| Google Maps coordinates | Raw latitude and longitude | Impossible to read or type | wapp.my/r/yourpin |
| TikTok video | Handle, video ID, share-source parameters | Share parameters are noise | wapp.my/r/yourvideo |
| TikTok profile | Handle plus share parameters | Looks like a machine string | wapp.my/r/yourbrand |
| WhatsApp chat link | Number plus pre-filled message | The encoded message is very long | wapp.my/r/chat-now |
| Any long web URL | Page path and tracking query | Ugly, unreadable, unprintable | wapp.my/r/youralias |
The rules for an alias are the same no matter which platform you are shortening: 6 to 30 characters, lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, and no leading or trailing hyphen. A few words are reserved. The full walkthrough lives in our free URL shortener guide for Malaysia.
How to Clean Any Link Before You Paste It
You will meet links that are not Shopee, Maps or TikTok too. The same logic applies to all of them.
- Identify the essential part. Usually it is everything before the question mark — the domain and the path.
- Assume the query string has a purpose. It may be tracking, a product variant, a session token or an affiliate identifier. Only delete it if you are sure.
- Prefer shortening over editing. Wrapping the whole URL in a short link is reversible and preserves every parameter; hand-editing a URL is not.
- Test on a real phone. Open the short link yourself, on mobile data rather than office Wi-Fi, before it goes into a broadcast.
- Pick an alias you can spell. If a customer cannot type it after hearing it once, the alias is not doing its job.
One useful default: keep the shortened link and the original side by side in your notes, so the raw destination is still there if a platform changes how it handles redirects.
Where to Use the Short Version
Once a link is short, it fits places the original never could:
- WhatsApp broadcasts and groups — where a wrapped link looks like spam and a clean one looks intentional.
- Social bios — Instagram, TikTok and Xiaohongshu. For multiple destinations, point the bio at a Bio Links page instead.
- QR codes — downloaded free from your dashboard, printed on packaging, receipts and shopfront stickers.
- Paid ads — a branded link in the ad copy reads as more trustworthy, and campaign tags stay attached.
- Email signatures and digital cards — add it to a vCard so one scan saves your details and opens the link.
- Selling pages — the WAPP.MY marketplace is built for exactly this kind of share.
Tracking the Links You Share
Shortening is not only about looks. Every saved link reports total clicks, unique visitors counted by IP address, repeat visitor percentage, device, browser, operating system, country, UTM source, referrer and a last-7-days trend.
For a Shopee or TikTok link, that data answers a question the platforms will not: which channel actually sent the buyer. For a Maps link, it shows whether the shopfront QR or the flyer did the work.
Two limits to keep in mind. Geography is country level only — there is no city or state breakdown, so separate links are the only way to split Penang from Johor. And known bots are filtered out before a click is stored, so your numbers are people, not crawlers.
UTM tags behave differently depending on the link type. On a /r/ short link they are recorded in your dashboard and forwarded to the destination, so your own analytics tool sees the campaign. On a WhatsApp-type link, UTM is recorded only, because WhatsApp does not read UTM parameters. You still see the click; the tags just cannot travel into the chat.
Two lifecycle rules are worth memorising. Deleting a link destroys its click history and releases the code for anyone to register again — so export what you need first. And if an account is suspended for abuse, its links stop forwarding and visitors see a branded 403 "Link Forward Blocked" page instead of a dead end.
